… not Lonesome Dove (read it, loved it!). I also loved the Revenant which to me is kind of a western. I don’t usually read within this genre, just because I don’t enjoy formula writing which I guess is my assumption of most westerns since there are authors with HUGE collections (to me this means that most are the same formulas on repeat). But I’m in the mood and willing to check out some titles to see if they’re for me! Help!

The other books in the LD series. Streets of Laredo is my second fave next to LD
I really enjoyed Butcher’s crossing by Jon Williams
I haven’t read many beyond Lonesome Dove.
Butcher’s Crossing by John Williams
The Virginian by Owen Wister
True Grit by Charles Portis
Little Big Man by Thomas Berger
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt.
None of these are formula. The last two are perhaps more revisionist and certainly more comic. But all good westerns have a touch of revisionism in them.
Also good is Assumption, three novellas (I think 3) set in the contemporary west. By Percival Everett.
True Grit by Charles Portis.
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt.
The Ox Bow Incident by Walter Van Tilburg Clark.
Warlock by Oakley Hall.
In the Distance by Hernan Diaz.
The Time It Never Rained by Elmer Kelton.
My dad really enjoyed the Sackett Brothers stories from Louis Lamore.
