Can anyone help me find some (probably romantic) novels with characters who make a sacrifice?
It can be “simple” like letting go of an SO or someone they love so they can be with someone else or happier or it can be harder, like pretending to be evil or not nice while being blackmailed or protecting someone, having a difficult past or a bad and trying to leave it behind or actually being nice but no one takes the time to find out.
I would like these tropes to fit in the context of a romance, as in: A is in love with B but B loves C, so A lets B go but ultimately finds love with D.
Unfortunately I can think of only one book with a similar trope, where a pirate has a “girlfriend” (did the term even exist back in Elizabethan England?), a former noblewoman who had fled her life to be a pirate too, but at some point he reports her to the Queen so she goes back to being a lady in waiting. He wanted her to live a safe life, even if he went about it in a very wrong way.
I LOVED that novel, but I’m not looking for a strictly historical romance.
