I want to read classics but there are certain features of classic books which put me off like the language is too boring and fancy, the dialogues are too Victorian, the plots are generally centered around royal families.
I did read The Crime and Punishment by Dostoevesky couple of days back but the sheer size of the book bored me. The author was writing the same thing in different tone, there were too many unnecessary details.
Please suggest me a straightforward book which is a classic and is different than ordinary classics.

Michael moorcock has some short fantasy novels that feel modern even though some were written in the 60s.Â
I recommend 20th century classics. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is my favourite. Steinbeck is always great. He has a lot of shorter novels like Of Mice and Men. My favourite of his is Cannery Row.
I recommend The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde because the plot isn’t boring and I find it much easier to read than other Classics because of the writing style and vocabulary 🙂
