I havent read in years, school pretty much drained the fun of reading from me and ive been in a slump to say. Im manly looking for a short stand-alone book or something that can be read quickly. Im 18 and i like action, sci-fi, fantasy, manga, or just a good read.

include the tile of the book, the author, and a short simple spoiler free description if you can.

I dont like horror, or books that feel like they were made hard to read.

    1. Before the inevitable onslaught of prose recommendations comes pouring in, here’s a delightful graphic literature book suggestion, just for fun.

Volume One of **ALL NEW X-MEN** by Bendis is called *Yesterday’s X-Men*. Highly recommended. It collects the first 5 issues of Bendis’s 41-issue run, and it’s super easy to finish reading in one day (even with all of the skipping backwards through the pages at times, so you can admire Immonen’s penciling again — or Bendis’s storytelling — both are equally memorable in this tale.)

My go to book rec for people who want to get into reading is Holes by Louis Sachar, because it appeals to all ages, has really short chapters, and is super engaging!

I had the same thing when I left school a few years ago. What got me back into reading was I am Legend by Richard Matheson. Very different to the film and at its heart a story about survival. From there I’d recommend getting started with the SF Masterworks series. Some of them can be a bit hard going so I’d recommend trying anything that stands out to you.

All You Need is Kill – Hiroshi Sakurazaka – I think there is a manga version but I read the novella. Alien invasion off Japan is being fought by soldiers in Mech Suits. The teen protag gets stuck in a time loop with one of his Heros and the two try to find a way to defeat the aliens for good.

    5. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life (this is a series of 6 graphic novels, so not super short, but one of my favorite reads at your age)
      Normal People by Sally Rooney
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan (might be a little too literary for your taste, but a great book and very short)

    6. Alan Mendelsohn, The Boy From Mars by Daniel Pinkwater.

Science fiction, set in the 1970’s. Leonard’s family moves to a new house and enrolls him in junior highschool where he is bullied and miserable. He makes friends with another new kid, Alan, who’s just moved from New York City. The two boys meet a bizarre cast of characters and discover something truly extraordinary.

Themes of friendship, being an outcast, and learning to believe in yourself.

All Systems Red by Martha Wells is a standalone story, even though it is the first of a series (Murderbot Diaries), which you’ll definitely want to read after!

    8. I Heard the Owl Call My Name – not at all your genre, but short, deep, sweet, funny, touching, and definitely “a good read”!

True Grit. Don’t let the fact that it’s a western scare you. (I personally do not like the genre.) Its an easy read but wonderfully written, great plot and characters, super entertaining, and not very long. The author is Charles Portis and the premise is this: a young girl hires a drunken US Marshall to hunt down the man who killed her father in savage territory.
