I’m in the process of reading this series and The Fifth Witness seemed lacking. I got sucked into the first three books and the stories were very compelling and I didn’t want to put them down. But this one felt like a slog. It was very easy for me to put down compared to the first three and the one after it.
I think what bothered me the about this book was it was sharp change in Haller’s attitude about the innocence of his client. In the first books, he talked about how it didn’t matter whether you believed the client was innocent, it was about mounting the best defense. But in this book, it’s like his whole attitude changed. That bothered me because I didn’t feel like the case/client warranted such a sharp turnaround in his demeanor. Also, I didn’t like the twist at the end. The whole book was spent with an underlying theme of Haller starting to think it mattered whether his client was guilty or not. And then to turnaround and show that all that growth was for nothing.

Of the Lincoln Lawyer books, this is hands-down my least favourite. It almost seems like Connelly phoned this one in – the story doesn’t flow like usual, the characters are not the least bit sympathetic, and frankly, I found it tedious. You’re not alone in not enjoying this book, but Resurrection Walk was much better. I hope you find it so as well.
