I’m looking for books that portray the rural, poorer side of the southern and western United States, especially if they have a focus on class or crime. Some examples of authors that I like in this style are John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy, both of whom I am a big fan of. I’ve tried Faulkner, but I found his work frustratingly difficult to understand. I’m also very fond of songwriters like Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Johnny Cash who explore similar imagery and themes through their music.
Any recommendations that I may enjoy would be appreciated.
