Something with mysterious creatures like in Goethe’s poem “The Erl-King”, or like “Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving or “The Headless Horseman” by Thomas Mayne Reid. But not too gothic like “Frankenshtein” or “Dracula”. P.S. Sorry for my bad English, not my mother tongue) and yes I know that Washingtor Irving was U.S. author and Headless Horseman is about U.S. too but i wont something with more europeen style,

MR James wrote several books of ghost stories such as Ghost stories of an antiquary. Most are set in old buildings, like cathedrals, ruins, old mansions etc. Some of the creepiest English stories ever written, some with creatures, and many turned into films by the BBC over the years which are on YouTube.
