Books about paintings/history of paintings

Me and my friend recently found an interest in art but on account of it being such a broad topic, it difficult to tackle it without any guidance. Could anybody recommend any books that could act as an “Introduction” to art? Maybe some history, importance, interpretations about art and specific styles and historic episodes.
