I’m interested in learning more about how music was treated in the ancient world. I don’t care so much about the technical side of things; i already have some background on what instruments were played (though my knowledge drops off significantly once you exit Ancient Persia). What I’m most curious about is more on how music was percieved and used — philosophically, religiously, culturally.
The time period doesn’t have to be fully restricted to the Ancient World either. I would like to avoid anything later than when classical music started exerting its influence. The earlier, the better, and I definitely prefer learning more about the Ancient World, but books about music in Medieval Europe, Feudal Japan, Preclassic Mesoamerica, etc. are all fair game.
If people have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.
