Inferno by Larry Niven. I just enjoyed his modern day take on Dante’s Inferno.

Stephen Fry has an ancient Greek myth series that is excellent – the last one comes out later this year.

Macunaima by Mario de Andrade is a classic Brazilian fantasy that weaves together different stories from Amazonian mythology in a really interesting way.

    4. The Mere Wife, by Maria Dahvana Headley, is a modern retelling of Beowulf from the perspective of Grendel’s mother. In this version she’s an Iraq veteran who becomes a survivalist upon returning from war, raising her young son just outside a fancy suburban development built on top of her old hometown. I found her perspective completely compelling. What a unique and memorable character. No surprise to find out that this author has published her own Beowulf translation.
