I see so many fantasy books that are series or duos. I’m sure they are great, but I’m in the mood for a good standalone well written fantasy story. I don’t care how long it is, as long as it’s one book. Preferably something that has generally well written character development, and a fantasy system that’s not ridiculously hard to keep track of. I’ve read a bunch of V.E Schwab’s books, she does fantasy really well in my opinion, but any level of fantasy can do.

I finished **Elantris** by Brandon Sanderson yesterday and thought it was alright.

If you like VE Schwab, I recommend Charlie Jane Anders. I’ve read two great standalone fantasy novels from her, All The Birds in the Sky and The City in the Middle of the Night. Very well-written characters and interesting magic/worldbuilding.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. Celtic islanders race flesh-eating horses. The setting is fantastic, the romance is just right, there’s a truly unsettling scene that happens in a stable at night, high stakes, and character development.

The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings. He has several good series but this is a stand alone.
