Hi everyone. Apologies in advance for the long post.

My gf and I are looking for books that we might both be interested in, or books that are a good entry point for reading as a hobby.

We are starting a book club of sorts, as a way for us to spend more time together and have more conversations beyond the day-to-day stuff we usually talk about. The “book club” will be just us lol

For context – we’re both in our mid 20s. She’s Chinese American, I’m Indian American.

We’re looking for a set of books we might both enjoy.

My girlfriend loves to read. Her favorite books include: Pachinko, Crying in H-Mart, The Overstory, and The Good Earth. I confess that I have heard of none of these, except for Crying in H-Mart, which I got her as a present (and because I love shopping at H-Mart).

I am not into reading the way she is, but not because I dislike it or anything: it just never crosses my mind to read things for fun, if that makes sense. I’m a software engineer who’s into startups, so I mostly read books that are useful for my professional development: Zero to One, Build, The Lean Startup, etc.

My girlfriend hates these types of books, so I think our book club will have to focus more on narrative style books (not sure if I’m using the correct terminology here).

I’m very open to reading more of these types of books.

I recently read The Three Body Problem and The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin during a long flight, and I absolutely adored both. I think these were the first books — other than the entrepreneurship ones I listed above or readings I did for college — that I read for pleasure, and actually finished, in over a decade.

Does anyone have any suggestions for books that my gf and I might both enjoy, given her favorite books above? I mention “starter” books here since I’m newer to the world of reading than she is.

    Thanks in advance!
