I recently finished reading Bad Blood about Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes and was genuinely shocked how far she was willing to push her faulty blood testing machine. People would take a blood sample and her machine would give back a mostly incorrect result which would in turn be used by doctors/labs to recommend medication or withhold it to patients who may or may not need it. That is just scratching the surface of how dangerous her machine could have been to the general public. They even used it on cancer patients and gave them false hope because she was never able to make a functional machine.

Devil in the White City by Erik Larsen. That one might be cheating since it is about a serial killer, but it is also about the Chicago World’s Fair and the Ferris Wheel and it is great!

Into thin Air by Jon Krakauer- a book about climbing Mt. Everest. Nothing to be fixed, per se, just a crazy-dangerous pursuit.
The Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston about the dangers of unaccounted for Small Pox virus samples.
Command and Control by Eric Schlosser is about the cold war nuclear program. I cannot believe we survived that
Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham is an excellent account of the nuclear crisis in what is now Ukraine, plus all the other nuclear accidents.
