I’ve been on a gothic romance/haunted manor/ doomed ancestral home streak recently, and I’m toying with the idea of trying to write one, and would love more suggestions.
I’ve recently finished reading in quick succession:
Rebecca by Daphne Dumaurier, Gallant by V. E. Schwab, Starling House by Alix E. Harrow, The Little Stranger, by Sarah Waters, We Have Always Lived In the Castle by Shirley Jackson, A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher, and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
Other books with atmospheric sentient house/Beauty and the Beast/mysterious mansions full of secrets are: The Secret Garden, Uprooted, Piranesi, The Starless Sea, The Thirteenth Tale, The Death of Jane Lawrence, The House on Vesper Sands, Howl’s Moving Castle, and of course, Jane Eyre, one of my most favorite novels of all time.
So, any other recommendations?
