I am very interested in the immigrant experience in NYC ca. 1880-1920. I know about the basics of tenement life and the kinds of illnesses that affected children. What I’m looking for is coverage of the illnesses from a medical perspective (not overly technical, though). What were the illnesses? What were they called back then? What was diagnosis and treatment like? What was *unknown* about certain illnesses, their causes and their symptoms? I would be grateful for any suggestions!
