Suggest me a book about a character (real or fictional) who is persona non grata

Specifically, I am looking for both biographies and fictional characters who were completely and utterly misunderstood. I am not looking for a coming-of-age character who starts as a grump and then becomes a successful socialite.

I’m looking for misanthropes, misappreciated characters, or misunderstood “geniuses” who either never become understood or appreciated during their lifetime, who through a lot of trial and error form bonds with a close-knit group of people, or who become okay with the “boring” life they carve for themselves.
