i’m really trying to get into poetry but all the modern, short-form poetry books i’ve read just haven’t touched me like i want them to. i wanted something longer to give it more depth and more chances to inspire emotion in me, with prose that guts me and makes me want to quote it a million times.
i don’t mind historical/classic recs as long as the language isn’t too hard to understand but i’m not a frequent classic reader so keep that in mind.
english or translated-to-english works only please!

Serbian poet Vasko Popa wrote a slim volume titled “Homage to the Lame Wolf.” Translated into English. The Rag poems are amazing. Pablo Neruda, anything really. “Windows That Open Inward,” is one of my favorites.
Anne Carson immediately comes to mind when I hear “long form” Have a look at her work.
The Beauty of The Husband may be a good starting point, although you can’t go wrong with any of her works.

Bluets, by Maggie Nelson is another rec.

Finally, my favourite: Louise Glück. Her collection, The Wild Iris will be right up your street.
