My nephew is a nice kid. Smart, polite, all that. But he’s had his emotional health issues which I’ll refer to generically as “anxiety.”
His birthday is coming up, and I want to give him something that he’ll enjoy. It doesn’t have to be self-help, but something that engages him and makes him want to try going out into the world again would be good. I don’t want to see him hide in his parents’ house (my brother and sister-in-law) forever.
Sorry, I know that’s not much to go on, and I don’t really know what he likes to read anyway. I want to help him, but I live about 1500 miles away and there’s not much I can do in person. For now, a birthday present is what I can do.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon.
The author really gets into the mind of a teen with Asperger’s who wants to solve a mystery.
How about [Bird by Bird](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/6aedad6f-3f8e-4fc0-94ce-4cc74be14d61) by Anne Lamott? I don’t consider myself a writer, but something about this book still makes me feel seen in the way other people seem to feel about poetry.
Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
Scythe. It’s brilliant.

The River Why By David James Duncan
It’s kind of a funny story – comedic story shining light on a boys mental health with emphasis on resclinance
