I’ve seen a lot of debate about whether the book is racist or not. Maybe it’s because in my language (Spanish) there are no words to be racist with black people, but I haven’t seen anything racist in the book. His characters, on the contrary, are super racist. The characters do not see themselves as racists but they are, they are even affiliated with the KKK. I think it is written from a biased perspective and is done on purpose but as an adult, I have the critical capacity to realize this. The book treats black people like big, uneducated children (except Mommy) but that’s because southerners saw them that way, but that’s not the reality. The movie is much softer even since we aren’t told as many details, for example, Rhett in the movie isn’t even racist. The book even exposes the hypocrisy of the people of the North by teaching that despite having freed the slaves, they were also racists. I don’t understand why many people call the book racist. The author never puts a positive focus on the racism of the southern people, although she does tone it down worse because, again, it is told from Scarlet’s perspective and she is quite stupid about some things. If they made a book about Schindler’s List, I wouldn’t believe it was a pro-Nazi book. I think many people lack reading comprehension.

That’s not how languages work. What does “racista” mean? Even if there’s not a word for something, *the concept still exists*. Reality is reality. (And in English, we also do not have a specific word for racism against black people.) But I get the rest of your take.
