Have you considered a short story collection? Based on your “interests”, maybe try some some short story collections by Stephen King. Some of them are Night Shift, Skeleton Crew, Nightmares & Dreamscapes, etc.
Maybe something like ‘Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales’? It’s a collection of short, dark fairy tales.
I will just say that reading is a skill and you will get better at it! I didn’t read for about 6 or so years through university and a few years after and my focus and attention span were horrible at first.
Just go slow at first if you need to (as in dont feel pressure tonread 100 books a year), and really focus on not getting distracted by phones etc.
Stephen King is a great place to start I think. But everyone likes different things. The mist by king was the first book I finished after my 6 year slump.
If you like super campy horror try some Grady hendrix. Easy to read, horror you don’t have to take too seriously.
Joe hill has some excellent novels but also some short story collections if you maybe want to start with some short stories.
Alex North is an author I don’t see get a lot of love on reddit but those are some good spooky thrillers. Chris Eccleston narrates the audiobook for the whisper man and I thought it was fantastic.
Judy Greer reads the audiobook for max brooks devolution. She’s annoying at first but i actually really enjoyed it and the book gave me the heebie jeebies.
Blake crouch writes some good speculative fiction that I find very attention grabbing and easy to read. I’ve gotten through the wayward pines trilogy, upgrade, and dark matter this year.
