I’m generally not a fan of westerns but was very pleasantly surprised by how gripping Lonesome Dove was. I was thinking about reading Shogun next. I’ve also considered continuing the LD series but I hear the other books pale in comparison to LD. Any suggestions are welcome!

The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson.
Shogun
First, you should read Dead Man’s Walk by Larry McMurtry and Comanche Moon by Larry McMurtry because there are also very excellent books part of the Lonesome Dove series. Then take The Streets of Laredo and toss it in garbage heap and set it on fire because Lonesome Dove was a masterpiece and should have stopped there before that tragedy of a book.
Then try:
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
Outer Dark by Cormac McCarthy
Child of God by Cormac McCarthy
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
No County for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The Stand by Steven King
1984 by George Orwell
Call of the Wild by Jack London
White Fang by Jack London
The Scarlett Plague by Jack London
Try:
**War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy**
Experience the grandeur and intimacy of life, love, and loss through the eyes of Russia’s aristocratic society during the Napoleonic Era.
**Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett**
Get swept away in this sweeping, historic epic about the construction of a cathedral in a fictional town in England during the Middle Ages.
**Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell**
An epic romance set against the backdrop of the Civil War and the changing tides of the American South that gripped the nation.
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
Les Miserables
