I’ve spent years not reading anything more than mangas and lately felt like I was missing out on amazing stuff, as I used to be quite a big reader when I was a kid and I spent so much of my free time diving in books.
So now, I started reading again, and I try to re-teach my brain to focus on reading and not let the attention slip to something else. I’ve read the first tome of Dune, which a tedious beginning but went to be more and more enjoyable as the story advanced; I tried reading the Silmarillion and gave up, as the “mythological report” type of storytelling isn’t really my thing, or at least not for that much pages; and I currently am reading the first tome of The Wheel of Time, which I am enjoying a lot as it feels slow paced while showing us through the eyes of each character how the world actually is.
Thing is, The Wheel of Time has A LOT of tomes, and I wanted to have a few ideas of books that I could read in between those, in case I felt like taking a break from them. I wanted to check out some standalone books, or tiny series (maybe 2/3 books). Also, I’m a french reader and I’m not comfortable enough with my attention span / reading ability to read a whole book in english (I know it makes things harder for you, sorry in advance…) I’ve heard Brandon Sanderson is greatly renowned but have no idea which book could be a interesting start, or if any other author could be a good suggestion ? Anyway, suggest me a fantasy book please ?

Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay, is a stand-alone novel with some interesting concepts.
