I was watching Train to busan again recently and started thinking about an alternative version of the movie where the bite victim doesn’t slip on-board the train, the zombie apocalypse is still happening outside but the passengers on the train are safe for now. I thought that could make a fascinating story, the paranoia that someone might be infected, seeing people die as they desperately try to get the train to stop and let them on as you pass by overrun stations, knowing that you can’t stay on the train forever due to supplies, fuel, etc, the risk of colliding with another train once the comms go down.
I think that kind of slow paced character driven story would work better as a book than a movie, so Does anyone know any books like this?

On the Beach by Nevil Shute.
The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay. A family vacationing in a remote cabin are confronted by strangers who bring news of an impending apocalypse.
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Not strictly horror, sci-fi has elements of impending danger as humanity’s last survivors who are unaware of the dangers on the planet they plan to colonize.
