I was reading my son (13 months) a book before nap time today, Linley Dodd’s “Slinky Malinki Catflaps” and it had some really wonderful words that I doubt many children would hear from adult conversations; “furtively”, “crannies”, “crotchety” and “caterwaul”, were a few of the standouts. I feel like most of the books we read him have pretty standard vocab and I really want him to hear less common words in context.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for their favourite children’s books that have more of these rare words – preferably books that come as board books!

    Thanks!

    1. There are whole series of science focused books that would fit the bill.

Chris Farrie is the writer or co-writer of : Astrophysics for Babies; Quantum Physics for Babies; Rocket Science for babies etc…

    2. freerangelibrarian on

Beatrix Potter. My parents read me all her books. I still remember learning the word ‘soporific’ from The Flopsy Bunnies.
