Hey all. I’m currently reading Memories of Silk and Straw by Junichi Saga and absolutely loving it. Everything that is depicted about early 20th century small-town Japan feels so tangible and lifelike, like you’re truly stepping back in time when you read it.
I’ve already ordered his other two books (Memories of Wind and Waves and Confessions of a Yakuza), but it got me wondering if there were other books out there that are similar to these by Dr. Saga, in that they take interviews of regular, everyday people from days gone by and compile them into a book?
The setting doesn’t have to be Japan, though I’d be happy for more similar recommendations from Japan. Just preferably nothing contemporary.
Thanks!
