I don't know if there's a good name for what I'm looking for, but I've realized that I particularly enjoy media that somehow manages to blend being silly and funny with darker and serious parts and somehow makes it all work. For example:

    • Fallout (games and show)
    • The Magicians (books and show)
    • Barbie movie
    • pretty much everything I've read by Catherynne Valente (The Past is Red, Space Opera, etc)

I've tried Vonnegut and Pratchett, both of whose stuff might seem like it fits what I'm looking for, but didn't love either. Any other authors to try that might fit this vague request? Thanks!

    1. Simon R Green. Start with the Nightside for urban fantasy, or Forest Kingdom for a bit of a riff on high fantasy.
