I’m finishing up my first draft for my horror novel but it reminds me more of a fantasy story at times. Any books or series that take place in the real world present day but still have horror fantasy elements? I’d love to read examples of the atmosphere I’m trying to capture with my series
I don’t read a lot besides standard single book horror, so the only example I know is Jujutsu Kaisen, a manga, so it’s not the same experience as a book series

Maybe The Ninth House?
This book is set in modern day except the main character goes to Yale with secret societies where they have magic and nasty shenanigans are happening. This book does a pretty good job of setting a grim tone, the main character dropped out of high school I think and is just absolutely drowning in school work and falling asleep all the time and so on and so forth.
They do something interesting which is to have a prologue to the book which is a scene later on in the book so that they immediately set right away the tone of what this book is and how dark it is and the bad things that are happening.
