I have massive amounts of books already. Somewhere around 1100 print books and another 400 or so e-books. Probably 90%+ are sci-fi or fantasy.
I mainly "discover" books to read from:
• Local library used book sales (books often $2 or less so I take chances easily and walk away with 20 new books)
• Hearing about them from friends/family
• Buying new books from authors that I liked their earlier works
The problem with this set of discovery methods is that nearly everything I have is either old enough to have been donated to a book sale, or is from an author who's been publishing for quite a while and I stalk their new releases. Nothing from new authors.
So… any recommendations for books from newer authors? I'm looking for stuff that's recent enough I wouldn't have heard of the author but something higher quality than "self-published e-book on Amazon for $1".
To narrow it down some, here's some general categories that I like:
Urban fantasy,
Characters with superpowers that seem useless but aren't,
Epic sci-fi space adventures,
"Hard magic" fantasy,
First person perspective.
General dislikes:
Books spending too much time in dreams/virtual reality,
Books that take too long to establish the setting (i.e. if I am 1/4th of the way through the book I ought to know if it's set on Earth or not),
Deus Ex Machina solutions to things.
Thanks!

I read mainly sci fi and fantasy too. Most of my favorite authors have been around awhile. I really like Michael Z Williamson and John Ringo. If you haven’t tried them yet they write good action. The newest author I am reading is Matt Dinniman and his Dungeon Crawler Carl books. Great characters, fresh premise and laugh out loud funny.
If you read Jim Butcher, his new Cinder Spires series is good and quite different from The Dresden Files which I also enjoy.
