I quite enjoyed Sara Dane, by Catherine Gaskin… It’s about a young woman who is sentenced to transportation to New South Wales for theft; and her life after that. She ends up first becoming a nanny to some children on board the ship she’s transported on, and then having a romance with one of the soldiers. He hands in his commission to stay in Sydney and marry her, and they begin a life together farming on the Hawkesbury River.
I don’t want to spoil the whole story but I found the book while I was travelling as a kid – it was just under a park bench somewhere? And yeah it’s always remained one of my old favourites.
CGunners on
There’s The Potato Factory by Bryce Courtenay, who also wrote the Power of One.
A family emigrates to Australia and then later to New Zealand. Some fantastic characters.
