Novel with a character who navigates through social hierarchy

What I'm looking for is a book that is rich in art of communication, gestures, and possibly manipulations that one uses to rise in ranks.

Really liked main character from "Dead Souls" by Nikoali Gogol because he resembles what I'm looking for.
