Hey guys, I am a 19 year old who has a very embarrassing story to say.

For a long time ever since grade 1 and all the way up to grade 11 I struggled heavily with reading and writing.
(Just to mention as well, I am not dyslexic, I have gone through some tests and it’s just that I have a lack of practice)

I never practiced much in school and I didn’t really put the effort either. I also have some past trauma from my father yelling at me all the time and putting me down whenever I struggled. He would use those struggles against me at times. So whenever I read and mess up some things I hear his voice.

Besides that I never really put the effort to read and now i am at a point in my life where i want to fix all of that, so I would like to know if anyone have any particular ways I can learn how to read consistently with a good flow and have good comprehension.

And I know practice makes perfect but I am curious to know how you guys read fast and have good comprehension.

    1. In addition to repetition, id recommend reading stuff that you’re really interested in. Makes getting into the text and sticking with it much easier. Personally, I find Sci-fi books hold my attention way more than other genres.

Everyone has different strengths, don’t get discouraged friend.

I have nothing to base this on but maybe if you get an audio book, and a hard copy of the same book, and read along while listening it might help you to recognize patterns and words. Just a thought.

Beyond that it’s probably just going to take practice. Maybe start with young adult books because the language and writing style may be simpler than say, War and Peace. Good luck, and it’s awesome that you’re trying to improve your reading skills.

    3. Good for you for wanting to tackle this! Reading is a skill like any other and it absolutely can be improved with practice. Like anything, it’s easier to get good at something that you enjoy. So pick books in genres that interest you. Books that are considered genre fiction or “mass market” (as opposed to literary fiction) are generally written with language that is considered easier to comprehend for the average reader.

Do you like police shows like Law & Order or Criminal Minds or CSI? Try authors like John Sandford, Jonathan Kellerman, or James Patterson.

Do you like action movies like the Bourne movies or Mission Impossible? Try Tom Clancy or James Rollins or Clive Cussler?

Do you like horror movies? Steven King is a classic choice. And he isn’t just limited to just traditional horror. He’s a great story teller across genres. Some of his books are huge and may be too much to tackle initially. Try some of his shorter books like Carrie or Cujo, or try his short stories. He’s really good at short stories.

And if you live anywhere near a library, go talk to your librarian. They are amazing resources and nothing would bring them more joy than to help you find books you would love reading.

Whatever interests you, there will be books in that theme.

Enjoy your journey! You have so many wonderful books ahead of you!
