I’m currently reading Emma by Jane Austen. I love it a lot, Emma is so complex and I’m shipping her and Mr.Knightley! I’m already looking for my next book to read though. I’m considering either Wuthering Heights or Pride and Prejudice. I’m also open to other suggestions by female writers! I’d prefer something a little challenging as I am returning to college in the fall after a year and a half hiatus.

    1. Emma is my favorite Jane Austen but for a long time I preferred Pride and Prejudice. Give it a go if you love Emma. Similar vibes but with different tropes.

I think the Bronte sisters are a naturally next place to go. I haven’t read them since high school but I found their work slightly more challenging than Austen though I prefer Austen.

I recently read Whale Fall by Elisabeth O’Connor that was published this year. Its about an 18 year old girl who lives in an isolated, tiny island off of Wales in the 1930s. When a whale is beached on the island it portends change in her life and the island. She wants for more and to escape to the mainland but is tied down by the island and her obligations. Its pretty short but I thought it was great. Like Austen’s work it covers women navigating the roles and limitations placed on them.

Emma is probably my favorite Austen protagonist. Either Emma or Elizabeth.

Read P&P next if you want to keep reading something somewhat lighthearted.

Read Wuthering Heights if you want to read a really dark story about humans being as cruel as they can be to each other.

For something more modern, The Handmaid’s Tale.
