I want to find a series or book that has this general concept. People start to get powers then a friend of a powered individual starts becoming obsessive with trying get a power themselves. From there, it doesn’t matter how it develops, I just think this take on superpowers is very realistic.
An example from a show I really like would be Pat from Raising Dion.
