Journey to the West is a classic if you’re looking at the characters starting in opposition to the main character or just simply more morally grey characters. It’s easy to see the massive impact on Manga storylines, especially with the trait of villains or misunderstood characters eventually becoming purely good through their character arcs. Dragon Ball draws the obvious similarities with characters like Piccolo and Vegeta, but other Manga like One Piece and Attack On Titan definitely are heavily steeped in these traits.
Also, even thought this is a TV recommendation and not a book, I have always loved the Character of Ben Linus from Lost.
