Recently re-read this early Grisham book. What really struck me was the ubiquity of the N-word. It was used casually by almost every character regardless of their place in the plot. Now granted this book is 30+ years old and the times they are a-changing. I have never spent any time in The South (story takes place in Northern Mississippi) so I dont know how “real” this was. It doesnt feel whitewashed (no pun intended) as it might if published today.

Any of my southern cousins want to weigh in? No judgements from me. Would be interested in seeing if the language has changed all that much.
