I read about the ancient egypt “book of the dead” in a museum and the themes and imagination fascinated me. I would love to read a book that has a similar feel to it or even incorporates elements of the ancient scroll.
Some parts I liked especially:
– the negative confessions: The deceased must declare innocence of his sins while the gods Horus and Anubis weigh his heart against a statuette of Maat herself. The ibis-headed god Thoth writes down the results and, should the deceased fail the test, his heart will be eaten by the animal Ammit.
– the different kind of spells to change into the form of a falcon or an ox, or the spell to take a ferry in the afterlife or to prevent your heart from testifying against you
– the ritual of the opening of the mouth
– the gate deities of the underworld
I am happy about any recommendations, no matter how farfetched!
