I also enjoyed Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose and loved the Pacific War Trilogy by W. Toll. I liked that each of these books brought the history to life with compelling narratives and characters but remained true to fact. Suggestions don't necessarily have to be related to war. Perhaps a good companion to The Guns of August at this book only deals with the beginnings of WWI.
