I'm tired of reading books with great complex characters dealing with a tough situation, only to have it all work out in the end with a conventional happy ending (i.e. infertile woman has miracle baby, struggling divorcee finds perfect new partner, couple struggling to reconcile works it all out and stays together in the end etc etc)

I'd like to read something where the "happy" ending has to come from acceptance of not getting what they want or something along those lines. Thanks!

    1. Not midlife crisis per say, but I really liked the ending of Self Care by Leigh Stein. It’s a very short read and also touches on how adulthood impacts millennials.

If you’re into horror/spooky fiction, maybe I’m thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid.

    2. I feel like Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman might fit this brief.

It’s not exactly a mid-life crisis, or at least not a typical one, but the MC becomes more self aware as the story progresses. It’s a lovely book and has characters that stay with you afterwards.
