Would love any and all recommendations that you think would be good for a first time expecting Dad! Anything from the pregnancy aspect to the first year would be preferred! Trying to learn and be the best partner I can to my wife and child! Thanks in advance!!

    1. Babies have 4 cries

      1. I’m hungry cry

      2. I’ve just shit myself cry

      3. I’m tired cry.

      4. I’m crying cos I’m a new born and that’s what I do cry.

      So your check list is

      1. Fed it. Or 2. Change it . Or 3 put it to bed. Or 4 play with it.

Or a combination of any 3 of those.

oh God… if I were you I’d try to be more real-world and ask questions of first time dads (probably among the first-year experience while it’s still fresh) BOOKS are “in a perfect world”… it’s like taking lamaze classes…. all the breathing and relaxation techniques go out the window when your spouse is in the throes of a hard contraction and the pain turns her into someone that you don’t recognize… if you’re not a patient person the best thing you can do for mom and baby is work on that. If you’re not healthy and you can’t stay up with little sleep try to reverse that.. good luck

There’s a great book called The Baby Owner’s Manual that you may like – it’s set up like a manual for an appliance (your model may not come with all standard parts, this is fine but if your model loses any parts seek repair services immediately).

For the existential parts of parenting, try Hold on to Your Kids by Gordon Neufeld (Neufield?). It talks about how to connect with kids at different ages and form a healthy relationship.

You ought to study up on dad jokes. You are gonna need them 🤪❤️.
      Also: Autumn by Knausgarrd

Congratulations! My first is now 13 years old and I vividly remember these 3 books. I always recommend them.

Happiest Baby on the Block- Harvey Karp and the 5 S’s. (saved my sanity)

Baby 411- any and all info you could think about babies first year in short, concise and easy to understand language (saved my sanity)

Baby Bargains- reviews and costs of all baby items you need, want, don’t need, and could think of. (saved my wallet)

Precious Little Sleep. Definitely pro sleep training overall, but contains lots of alternative strategies for improving sleep if you aren’t interested in “sleep training.” It helped me set realistic expectations for baby sleep (which no other baby book did). It’s the most applicable and helpful book I’ve ever read!

    7. I really liked cribsheet by Emily Oster. This covers birth to toddler. Basically discusses the research behind many popular recommendations (e.g. breastfeeding vs formula) and how many research results are not super strong. My major take away was to try your best and if you’re reasonably taking credible and researched advice, you should be fine.

She also has expecting better, which is about pregnancy, but I haven’t read that.
