I know this is a very weird question, but I've never really sunk my teeth into properly reading fiction books before outside of the ones I grew up with. I've never tried looking for any until now either.
I know the super duper popular ones like the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, but I'm sure I wouldn't have heard about them had it not been for their gigantic following and the existence of the Movie and series.
I just super recently learned the Wheel of Time is actually a Fantasy story like the Lord of the Rings instead of a sci-fi with time travelling children (I have no idea why that's what I thought Wheel of time was). I only recently heard of author Brandon Sanderson and his works like Mistborn being a new modern fantasy. I've seen lots of people (including a close friend) praise him for being the best modern fantasy writer alive aside from George R.R. Martin.
I have read Chronicles of Narnia as a child though.
I don't know if Dungeons and Dragons has a book.
So right now these are the only fantasy books I know.
- The Lord of the Rings + Hobbit + Silmarillion (Have not yet read Silmarillion)
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- A Song of Ice and Fire (have not read)
- Mistborn (have not read)
- Wheel of time (have not read)
I'm looking for fantasy books that feels like an epic.
They don't need to be as bright as the sun, but I'm not really looking for grimdark either. I'm usually not a fan of bleak and dark stories where everyone is fucked up and bad and it's just depressing. It's the same reason I can't really take in dreadful war stories where everything is just to show how tragic everything is.
Also I'm not looking for fantasy works like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson where a lot of it is urban fantasy or tied to our real world. I'm looking for the full blown fantasy world!
If there are authors with multiple works which may apply (I'm really unfamiliar with any writer aside from CS Lewis, Tolkien, Martin and Sanderson-) I wanna read more of their other works.
Thanks!
