It seems like when people talk about the "greats" of english litterature, they almost always talk about books from the 20th century – from authors like Pynchon, Joyce, Faulkner, McCarthy, Hemmingway and so on and so forth. Those are just from the top of my head, I know there's more.
When people then actually do mention books by authors from the 1800's, it's most likely Poe, Austen, the Bröntes, Twain and Melville…
Are there any great lesser known english books from the 19th century that you'd recommend?
I'm asking because I love the litterature of that period from my own native country, and I'd like to explore ones from the english speaking world as well.
