When I read fiction, I can vividly imagine the details and what the characters do like a "mind movie". However when I read non-fiction I try to connect the words with pictures so for example, "The brain has 86 billion neurons" (i imagine a brain, then zoom into the brain and zoom out again with a "86B" in front of the brain). This isn't always efficient though since non-fiction doesn't have good storytelling or "imaginative flow" so you can't imagine every sentence very well.
Some of you might say "subvocalization" but I feel like there is something missing from just subvocalizing non-fiction. It's just passive reading and when I just subvocalize I cant remember much.
So how do you read a non-fiction book? What's the process inside your head?
