Looking for a good History of the American Civil War

I went to a Civil War Battlefield today and I'm interested to read more on the subject.

I'm looking for something that isn't too dry, preferably reads more like a novel, and focuses on both the military action and the colorful personalities that were present in the war.

Also – please no lost cause stuff.
