I just finished reading Godkiller by Hannah Kaner and enjoyed it for what it was – a 3.5 out of 5 star read for me. I was fond of the characters and liked the world. I’m trying to get into fantasy books and thought this would be a good one to start with. It was a little too dark for me – especially the main characters. I got attached to them and didn’t enjoy reading about them constantly in mortal & often disturbing peril, suffering, and separated from one another. I don’t think this is BAD writing just not for me at the moment. Anyone have suggestions for fantasy series that are not dark? I’m thinking cozier, more lighthearted but with great characterization, good world building, well paced, etc. I do understand that stakes, suffering and drama are important to any fantasy series and I’m happy with that. but Godkiller is reminding me a bit more of Game of Thrones in that I’m just stressed out and sad reading it. The happy, feel good moments & victories are so few and far between that I’m wondering why I’m reading the sequel Sunbringer. I think now only to make sure everyone is alright at the end and not out of pleasure and enjoyment

It might be a bit on the YA side, but I thoroughly enjoy Raymond E. Feist, starting with the Riftwar-series. I’m in my forties now and I still read them from time to time.
Wheel of Time is a slog for about 3 books but is overall excellent. I’m currently on book 4 of the Dresden Files and highly recommend it. Very fun series. Discworld series is top notch too.
Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series might fit the bill. A lot of the drama is more political than world ending.
