I remember the days before we had so many platforms (which are amazing tools to find great books) with endless booklists that cause one’s TBR list to grow faster than one can catch up. Back then, visiting the library and picking a book from the stacks that you might never have heard of and that looked interesting was a real thing.

Does anyone still do this, or do you mostly rely on research before getting books?

Also, looking back on your reading history, have you enjoyed books more when you picked from your TBR, or if you randomly picked up something from the library that you’d never heard of before?

    1. I read on Kindle and I use Book Bub for deals on e-books. Whenever something looks interesting and is less than $2 I buy it. I have way more books in my Kindle library than I will be able to catch up with. I usually pick my next read in the order that they were purchased, but I’m not strict about it. If something really catches my eye I’ll go for that one first. The rest will be there when I’m ready for them.

It’s incredibly rare I’ll research fiction other than a quick genre check. I go off the *feel* of a book; is the cover enticing? Does the title sound intriguing? Do I usually like this author? Am I in the mood for the vibe this book is giving out?

I find researching a novel just takes the wind out of my reading sails a bit. It’s fun to jump into the unknown. I have a long tbr list but most of them are picked blindly, based on nothing more than a feeling. It usually works out.

I don’t go too deep with research. If it’s in the right ballpark and sounds good, I’ll buy it. The problem is, we’re bombarded with suggestions and ideas whether we’re looking for them or not. An advert here, a Reddit post there.

My TBR pile is insane because I can’t avoid hearing about books that sound good.

    4. Right now I’m following my reading list. I picked a book that I thought I’d love but is kind of dialogue heavy and halfway through that decided that I’d switch to something “more exciting” from my reading list.

I still kind of pick random books that people mention online. But most of my books are digital.

My TBR list is basically a bunch of books I’ve come across that I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy reading, and don’t want to lose track of. So basically a pre-screened pool of options that I will never. ever. finish.

Given that, I will absolutely start reading something that’s not on it because it’s just one option among…280 others, as of now.
