The Great American Road Trip: A Journey across the USA
By Paul Oake
Travel is largely about dreams-envisioning stunning landscapes or bustling cities, picturing yourself amidst them, whispering their enchanting names, and then discovering a way to turn that dream into reality.
Do you know, approximately 11.5 million international tourists visited Florida in 2018? Isn't it amazing? Of course, it is. However, inspired by this vibrant influx, in the spring of 2019, I made a life-changing decision. After years of contemplation, I sold my house in St. Petersburg, Florida, packed my essentials into my Jeep, and embarked on a 2000-plus mile journey that would span nearly four years.
This adventure wasn't just a drive across the United States; it evolved into a circumnavigation of the continent, with each mile offering new experiences and discoveries. As a sailor, my journey also involved exploring various sailing destinations along the way, making it a truly unique and memorable expedition.
Starting Point: The Sunshine State
Florida, often referred to as the "Sunshine State," was the starting point of my journey. Known for its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and unique ecosystems, Florida is a vibrant and diverse state located in the southeastern region of the United States. With over 1,300 miles of coastline, the state is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Gulf of Mexico on the west, providing ample opportunities for water-based activities.
The Florida Keys, a coral cay archipelago at the southern tip of the state, are particularly iconic. They offer world-class snorkeling, sailing, and diving opportunities in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic. The mild winters and hot, humid summers make Florida an ideal destination for those seeking warm weather year-round, although the state occasionally faces the threat of hurricanes during the summer and fall months.
Exploring Florida's Natural Wonders
Florida is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, from the expansive Everglades in the south to the pine forests of the northern panhandle. The Everglades, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a unique wetland system that hosts a variety of wildlife, including alligators, manatees, and numerous bird species. The state's commitment to preserving its natural wonders is evident in the numerous national and state parks, providing opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and kayaking.
The Vibrant Cultural Scene
Beyond its natural beauty, Florida boasts a vibrant cultural scene. Cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa offer a mix of art, music, and cuisine that reflects the state's diverse population. Miami, in particular, is famous for its art deco architecture, Latin American influence, and dynamic nightlife. These cities are not only cultural hubs but also significant contributors to Florida's economy through tourism, agriculture, aerospace, and technology sectors.
Florida's Economic Vitality
Economically, Florida plays a significant role in the United States. Its tourism industry is a major driver of the state's economy, with millions of visitors flocking to its theme parks, beaches, and attractions each year. Additionally, the agriculture, aerospace, and technology sectors contribute to Florida's economic prosperity, making it a dynamic and vital part of the country.
Conclusion!
My journey across the USA started in Florida, a state that perfectly embodies the blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and economic vitality. Whether you're sailing along the coast, exploring unique ecosystems, or immersing yourself in the diverse urban experiences, Florida offers something for everyone. The state's combination of sun, sea, and culture makes it a truly distinctive and unforgettable destination. This is just the beginning of my story. Stay tuned as I continue to share my adventures and discoveries from my nearly four-year road trip across the United States. The Great American Road Trip: A Journey across the USA
