I really liked the Captains in Robert Reed’s Marrow. They reminded me of the Aristoi in Walter Jon Williams’ Aristoi. Any suggestions for similar?

I like the idea of a society having an elite class naturally gifted “normal” people can enter without it completely degenerating into power for power’s sake. The idea (fictional to be sure) of the elite class having a sense of responsibility for the rest of species is a pleasant one.
