Definitely **House of Leaves** by Mark Danielewski. It’s not for everyone, but it’s the only book that has ever given me literal nightmares.

But right now I’m about halfway through Paul Tremblay’s **Horror Movie (A Novel)**, and it’s getting creepier and creepier. A really cool format that switches between the 90s (about production of a microbudget horror movie that went wrong) and present day (about a Hollywood studio producing a remake). Great audiobook quality too.

    2. *The Exorcist* by Peter Blatty

*The Devil Rides Out* by Dennis Wheatley

      *Ghost Story* by Peter Straub

    3. The Haunting of Hill House is genuinely creepy and unsettling. It’s not a run of the mill haunted house story – some of the creepiness comes from ambiguity (what’s behind all the weird manifestations?), and some of it from jarring emotional disjointedness (everyone has an utterly terrifying night, then the next morning they’re reveling in joy; the housekeeper hates them and also makes amazing meals for them; characters snipe at each other on the surface and love each other deep down and vice versa).
