As the title suggests, I’m a huge anime fan, and have been for most of my childhood. I just enjoy the overall “over the top” feel that most anime provides. However, I feel as though I am a bit closed minded these days, and want to expand my horizons. I am currently writing a superhero fantasy novel inspired by Shonen anime, with themes such as how friends can make you stronger, however I haven’t read many novels in the past few years to get some perspective. With all that being said, what kind of fantasy books would you recommend for a newcomer such as myself? My favorite anime series includes One Piece, Black Clover, ReZero, Eden’s Zero, and Classroom of the Elite (I know this isn’t fantasy but I love how some of the students partake in schemes and betrayals, and I wanted to introduce that suspenseful vibe into my novel as well)

    1. Read the actual manga of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It goes way beyond the movie and is fantastic.

In terms of novels, The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson has a very anime feel. It’s the first book of a self contained trilogy

    2. Dungeon crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman should be right up your alley. The audiobook is outstanding too. I’m also very much enjoying Heretical Fishing by Haylock Jobson.

    3. Tales of Ketty Jay series by Chris Wooding – there are pirates on airships, magic, demons, and some characters who’d be familiar to the fans of fullmetal alchemist anime

    4. QueenWildMask on

Cradle by Will Wight. The first two books are kind of slower but then it takes off
