I've never really thought of it, but in english books dialogue is presented in a diffirent way, compared to books where i live.

So, bassicaly, i live in a post-soviet country and only ever read books in russian (since that's the language i'm most familiar with). In russian books, the way dialogue is shown is by using the ' – ' symbol and thoughts are shown with ' " " ' symbols. An exmaple would be: – That's wierd – she said – i should look into that. or "That's odd – she thought".

But in the english books, as far as i'm aware, they highlight the start and end of dialogue with an apostraphe. So i wonder, is the english way also the universal way, or do they use dash anywhere else, besides post-soviet countries? I guess i could just google it, but it would be more interesting to hear from actual people.
